Mexican Independence Day

After Mexico gained independence from Spain on Sept. 16, 1821, the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson was under Mexican rule for 33 years.  This year, the Presidio Museum will celebrate Mexican Independence Day on Sept. 16 with living history re-enactors dressed as Mexican soldiers, craft-making opportunities and presentations about the time period.

The event runs from 10 am to 1 pm and kids of all ages will enjoy making lotería magnets from bottle caps and tinsmithing.  Tortillas will also be handmade on site and served to visitors.

In addition, Dr. Salome Hernandez will give a bilingual presentation on the history of Mexican Independence.  Dr. Hernandez holds a Ph.D. in history, Spanish Borderlands and Latin American history.  She served as a U.S. Foreign Service officer in China, where she also worked as a university professor and authored a novel for young adults, which tells the story of 19 orphans sent from Mexico City to California as settlers in 1799. Today, Dr. Hernandez lives in San Diego where she continues consulting, teaching, and writing.

Presidio Trust president Homer Thiel will share his insights on Mexican family life around the time of Mexican Independence, focusing on women and children.

The event is included with Presidio Museum admission of $5 for adults, $1 for children 6-14, and free for Presidio Museum members and children 5 and under.
