NEW THIS YEAR
See animals in a whole new light with our amazing Wildlife Lantern Safari, featuring more than 60 creatures — all aglow!
A “lantern festival” is known as the conduit toward peace, forgiveness and/or reconciliation. It symbolically carries people’s expectations for a better life and prosperity in the coming year. Here at the Phoenix Zoo, we’re putting our own animal twist on the celebration.
In ancient times, oil paper or satin were used to make the outer skin of the lantern, bamboo was used to make the skeleton and candles were placed in the middle. In modern times, with the progress of science and technology, the production of color lanterns has changed a lot.
The Zoo is excited to bring these wildlife lanterns to brighten up the Africa Trail. Animal lanterns include species on exhibit at the Zoo like giraffe, tigers and a rhinoceros as well as other spectacular displays of hippos, okapi and a brown bear.
As technology has improved, electricity is used to illuminate the lanterns while using the same traditional lantern-making skills of the past. Guests can see a monkey village “glow” as high as 18 feet along with two gorgeous herds of zebras. Not to mention meerkats, African elephants, lions, mandrills and everything in between.
