Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a place of fascinating and monumental extremes.
State Route 85 dead ends into Lukeville, which is located completely within Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Over thousands of years, humans, plants, and animals have successfully adapted to the area’s volcanic mountain terrain and fluctuating desert temperatures.
The monument, created in 1937, has been designated as an International Biosphere Reserve; this is not a place to hurtle through – you’ll want to savor your time in this natural, wild preserve. Stop in the Kris Eggle Visitor Center to plan your visit; ranger-led programs are typically offered in January, February, and March, when the weather is most agreeable.
There’s also a border crossing from Lukeville into Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico. So if you are continuing your trip south of the border, you can buy Mexican automobile insurance or catch a bus back to Tucson or Phoenix.Visit City Site
