Dragoon

Take in a little bit of Texas in southern Arizona. Dragoon’s spectacular Texas Canyon is home to the Amerind Museum, a one-of-a-kind anthropological and archaeological collection.

Right Now

The town of Dragoon and the craggy Dragoon Mountains, located off Interstate 10 between Benson and Willcox, take their name from a United States cavalry unit. But these days it’s synonymous with an outstanding collection of American Indian art and artifacts and one of the most eye-popping rest areas in the region.

Texas Canyon is a sacred area to American Indians, rumored to have been a winter camp for the legendary Apache leader Cochise. The striking rocky buttes contain petroglyphs and pictographs. Once you lift your jaw off the ground, head for the Amerind Museum. Founded in 1937 as a private, nonprofit research institution, it offers an outstanding permanent collection, along with guest exhibitions, lectures, and such special events as a Mata Ortiz pottery show. There’s also a fine gift store on-site.

The casitas of Triangle T Historic Ranch are a great place to bunk down and enjoy some Old West hospitality. Look familiar? That’s because it’s been a filming site for such movies as 3:10 to Yuma and Tombstone. Worked up an appetite? Savor a mesquite-grilled steak in the iconic Rock Saloon.
