Boasting the world’s longest stalactite formation, Kartchner Caverns introduces visitors to the mysterious world of caves. Explore the bowels of a living cave and marvel at Arizona’s tallest natural column formation. Located in Southern Arizona, this ADA-accessible park is just a short hop from Tucson in nearby Benson.

History & Nature

Discovered in 1974, Kartchner Caverns is a massive limestone cave that’s home to many outstanding features, including remarkable minerals and formations as well as some winged friends.

Things To Do

Take a guided tour for an intimate experience in this incredible underground world, and learn about its delicate ecosystem. The caverns’ stalactites and stalagmites are still developing, so technically, you can see them grow before your very eyes, but that may require microscopic vision.

The Discovery Center is another must-see that further examines the cave. Learn about the bat population and the fossils of dwellers past. Interactive exhibits illustrate how the cave’s formations develop while a multi-screen video transports you back to the discoverers underground journey.

Hotels, Lodging & Camping

The park offers camping and RV sites off of the main road past the Discovery Center with electric hookup and water. Camping fees are $30 per night. There are an addtional four camping cabins available at the park for $89 per night. More RV sites are available in Benson and Tucson.

Accessibility Information

The trail system inside Kartchner Caverns was developed specifically for people with limited mobility, however, know before you go to ensure that you have a great visit.

Park Hours: 6 a.m. - 10 p.m., year-round

Discovery Center Hours:

  • December 22 - May 15: Open daily, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • May 16 - December 21: Open daily, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

  • Per Vehicle (1 – 4 Adults): $7/day
  • Individual/Bicycle: $3/day
