The 8th Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts: Weird, Wild West
Join Many Mouths, One Stomach; Roosevelt Row; The Strange Family Circus and PAPA, LLC as The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts celebrates its 8th public procession on November 9, 2013. As a family friendly, 100% participatory event, PAPA is a unique experience where the community is invited to walk through the streets together in a free celebration of Downtown Phoenix. This year’s theme “Weird, Wild West,” is sure to bring out the creativity in everyone from Steam Punks to Jackelopes to Buffalo Soldiers. PAPA festivities will begin at 5:00pm in the Roosevelt Row ARTS Market (north side of Roosevelt Street between 5th and 3rd Streets) and will parade through Downtown Phoenix and back. Free parking is provided by the Arizona Center.
The pre parade events include performances by local musicians and dancers, while circus entertainers and street performers provide demonstrations and workshops. A children’s area will include amusements, construction of temporary public art, face painting and crafts. Roosevelt Row will provide vending and food trucks. Members of the community do not have to register to march, however, participants who choose to enter the judged contests must check in by 5pm. Prizes designed by local artist Jason Alan Davis are awarded for best float, best group, best bike, best costume and best “cute” (typically kids and pets). The public procession kicks off at 6:00pm, taking over the streets with its high energy, pedestrian and bike tour. PAPA takes pride in its “non motorized floats” policy to keep the parade ecologically friendly. Following the procession, internationally recognized performance troupe Flam Chen will dazzle the crowd with their brand of stilt dancing.
The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts celebrates the arts and culture that are a vital part of a metropolitan downtown. PAPA unites the arts with the greater community by providing an open to the public, mobile expression of Downtown Phoenix life. The free, family event is a New Times Best of Phoenix winner.
