Scenic Spaces

Just off Route 66, Petrified Forest National Park’s 28-mile loop is a must-ride detour. Roll past rainbow-hued badlands and sweeping overlooks that beg for a helmet-off photo — a quiet pause surrounded by geology older than any road.

From Kingman, follow Oatman Highway over Sitgreaves Pass and into the ghost-town charm of Oatman. The twisting switchbacks make this one of the most thrilling rides on Route 66. Stop by Cool Springs Station, a desert relic with character.

Historic & Iconic Stops

At Standin’ On The Corner Park, snap a photo by the flatbed Ford and “take it easy” at this tribute to the Eagles song that made Winslow famous.

A postcard come to life, Hackberry General Store shows off rusted pumps, classic cars and walls covered in Route 66 memorabilia. It’s a favorite among motorcyclists, too, so plan to linger awhile to make new friends among the many travelers that stop in.

Seligman, aka the “Birthplace of Historic Route 66,” celebrates the Mother Road with neon signs, retro shops and the Copper Cart, home to a Route 66 Motoporium with vintage autos and motorcycles.

Diners on the Route

Built from scrap lumber in 1953, Delgadillo’s Snow Cap Drive-In is a playful spot featuring founder Juan Delgadillo’s 1936 Chevy out front and jokes inside — like a “Sorry, we’re open” sign and a door with two knobs. Order American-food classics, including the famously literal “cheeseburger with cheese.”

When your tank and stomach both need a refill, downtown Williams delivers. Head to Grand Canyon Brewing & Restaurant for pub favorites, Red Raven for an elevated bistro experience or the recently reopened Rod’s Steakhouse for premium Arizona beef.

Overnight Options

In Holbrook, make one of the Mother Road’s most iconic sights your accommodations for the night: the Wigwam Motel. Fifteen tipi-shaped guest rooms, complete with modern amenities, welcome you for a restful evening while the rest of the property feature an historic automobile collection.

La Posada, in Winslow, is a far cry from a roadside motel — it’s one of the last great Harvey Houses, lovingly restored withoriginal woodwork, gardens, art and quiet corners to unwind after hours spent in the saddle. Highlights include the hotel’s rich railroad history, sprawling common spaces and on-site lauded restaurant, the Turquoise Room.
