In partnership with Tread Lightly! and Arizona State Parks and Trails, the Arizona Office of Tourism is sharing how you can responsibly enjoy the outdoors while visiting Arizona's vast and diverse outdoor environments by off-highway vehicle (OHV). In this series, we break down each of the T.R.E.A.D principles.
D - Do Your Part
When you hit the trails on an off-highway vehicle (OHV), remember to do your part. Follow these tips to ensure you're being a team player in the outdoors, and keeping natural areas beautiful for others to enjoy.
- Carry a trash bag and pick up litter left by others.
- Pack out what you pack in.
- Practice minimum impact camping by using established sites and camping 200 feet from water resources and trails.
- Observe proper sanitary waste disposal or pack your waste out.
- Before and after a ride, wash your vehicle and/or bike to reduce the spread of invasive species.
- Build a trail community. Get to know other types of recreationists that share your favorite trail.
- Spark arrestors are required on all OHVs traveling on public lands.
- Prevent unnecessary noise created by a poorly tuned vehicle or revving your engine without need. Use proper silencers that meet regulatory decibel levels on exhausts.
- Be prepared. Carry a spill kit which includes absorbent pads, socks and booms.
- Use a fuel collar or bib when fueling to catch drips and overflow and prevent backsplash.
About Tread Lightly!
Tread Lightly! is a non-profit organization that leads a national initiative to promote the responsible use of motorized vehicles when recreating outdoors. Their goal is to balance the off-road and off-highway vehicle (OHV) users’ need for adventure with the need to conserve the places where they ride and explore.
To support this, they offer a wide range of projects, programs, trainings, and educational materials to promote a responsible outdoor recreation message. Their work includes educating off-road and OHV users on responsible riding practices, reducing the impact on the environment and protecting natural and cultural resources.
