Salvadoreno Restaurant #2- Pupusas
Our restaurant specializes in authentic home style cooking from El Salvador as well as a couple of other Central American countries. We pride ourselves in using only recipes passed down by our grandmother, who presently resides in El Salvador as well as incorporating some recipes from our staff. Our staff is primarily Salvadoran ladies, with just a few from other Central American countries. We pride ourselves in that because we feel it helps preserve the authenticity of this style of cooking. Our most popular dish are the "pupusas". These are hand-made corn tortillas filled inside with pork, cheese & beans. We have been recognized in Phoenix Magazine for our Ceviche as a Top 50 Dish in the Valley. Our sopas, soups, are a full meal on their own. Large bowls loaded with vegetables, beef or chicken & chipilin, a leafy green vegetable native to Central America. We hope to see you soon at any of our 4 locations!
Our "business" began back in our homeland of El Salvador, where Nina Martha(grandmother) became known in the neighborhood for delicious tamales de pollo, elote, & various other homemade meals. She would send her daughter, Miriam, to deliever these meals to the workers at the "fincas", fields of corn, coffee beans, watermelon. Eventually, due to the Civil War in El Salvador, the family relocated to the United States. They first settled in Santa Ana, CA in the mid 80's.Miriam did continue the food sales tradition with her children. She would make "pupusas" to sell at local soccer games. These were a hit with everyone! Eventually, the family relocated to Phoenix, AZ. It was here that Miriam decided to fulfill a long-time dream of hers, open up her own restaurant. The 1st location opened its doors in 2002. This location opened in 2005 & quickly has set itself as the spot for Salvadoran cuisine and cultural events.
