Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony

Tito Muñoz, conductorThe Phoenix Symphony Chorus, Dr. Thomas Bookhout, chorus masterFelicia Moore, sopranoBriana Elyse Hunter, mezzo sopranoMiles Mykkanen, tenorNorman Garrett, baritoneBeethoven’s ninth and final symphony, premiered years after illness left the composer completely deaf, revolutionized the symphonic form with vocal soloists and a chorus joining the orchestra to sing his setting of Friedrich Schiller’s poem “Ode to Joy,” celebrating the brotherhood of all humanity. Premiered 200 years ago with Beethoven seated beside the conductor facing the orchestra, at its conclusion, one of the soloists turned the composer around to see the thunderous applause he no longer could hear. Tito Muñoz leads four vocal soloists, The Phoenix Symphony Chorus and orchestra in this orchestral masterpiece. Praised for his versatility, technical clarity, and keen musical insight, Tito Muñoz is internationally recognized as one of the most gifted conductors on the podium today. After 10 years as the Virginia G. Piper Music Director of The Phoenix Symphony, Tito’s tenure, one of the longest in the organization’s history, concluded at the end of the 2023-24 season.Concert RepertoireHindemith: Symphonic MetamorphosisBeethoven: Symphony No. 9 “Choral”

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

Stray Cat proudly concludes season 23 with a distinctly Stray Cat approach to a beloved favorite - the camp-tastic sci-fi classic musical LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. This production promises even more of the humor you’re used to - just with a decidedly more adult edge. This production will also lean into the ‘horror’ and hopefully land darker than past revivals - a ghoulish, yet undeniably hilarious - nightmarish descent into violence and the monstrous hunger for validation. Some monsters are born. Others are just waiting to bloom. The full press release is below. Please let me know if you need anything additional.FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASELITTLE SHOP OF HORRORSbook and lyrics by Howard Ashmanmusic by Alan Menkindirected by Ron Maymusical direction by Mark 4manchoreographed by Stephen HohendorfTempe Center for the Arts Studio TheatreMay 2 - 17, 2025Feed me, Stray Cat!The characters are the same. The songs are the same. But the show won’t be. We have watched this long-time favorite on local stages for decades and accrued a whole rolodex of thoughts in the vein of, “…what would happen if we did a production Stray Cat style?” Welp. Time to find out! We’re about to do everything we can to put the ‘horrors’ back into the little shop y’all know and love. Please be aware the show contains adult language and situations and comic depictions of over-the-top gore. Often this is a show that is considered family friendly - but we would exercise caution and strongly encourage treating this production as at the very least PG-13.WHEN: FRIDAY 5.2.25 at 7:30pm – OFFICIAL OPENING NIGHTSATURDAY 5.3.25 at 7:30pmSUNDAY 5.4.25 at 2:00pm THURSDAY 5.8.25 at 7:30pmFRIDAY 5.9.25 at 7:30pmSATURDAY 5.10.25 at 7:30pmSUNDAY 5.11.25 at 2:00pm]WEDNESDAY 5.13.25 at 7:30pmTHURSDAY 5.14.25 at 7:30pmFRIDAY 5.15.25 at 7:30pm - ASL INTERPRETED PERFORMANCE SATURDAY 5.16.25 at 7:30pm - CLOSING PERFORMANCEWHERE: Tempe Center for the ArtsSTUDIO THEATRE 700 W Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, AZ 85281PLENTY OF FREE PARKING AVAILABLE!****THE PARKING GARAGE RIGHT NEXT TO THE VENUE IS OPEN. DHPC Presents Jazz Vocalist Tommy Gearhart

On Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 4 p.m., Desert Hills Presbyterian Church (DHPC) will welcome soulful jazz vocalist Tommy Gearhart to the stage for a concert showcasing the works of the legendary Tony Bennett. As part of the Church’s popular Arts at the Rocks performing arts series, this free event will take place on the DHPC campus at the foot of the beautiful boulders, 34605 N. Tom Darlington Rd., Scottsdale, Ariz. 85266. A sensitive yet powerful vocalist with a deep passion for ballads, Tommy Gearhart has developed his own sound as he explores the Great American Songbook and jazz standards. A former drummer, he transitioned to singing at age 25. Under the mentorship of Jon Hendricks and drawing influence from artists such as Frank Sinatra, Andy Bey and Mark Murphy, Tommy quickly honed his warm baritone voice and refined musicianship. Today, his vocal style blends heartfelt expression with jazz sophistication, making him a distinctive and compelling presence in the world of jazz. With a mission of working with high-quality, professional artists and musicians to provide the DHPC congregation and the North Scottsdale/Carefree community at large with experiences they might not otherwise have, Arts at the Rocks is a series of performing arts events offered by the Desert Hills Presbyterian Church Music and Arts Ministry. Most events are free of charge and held at the DHPC campus, which offers breathtaking views of the boulders and the desert landscape to further enhance the concert experience.
