WOPILA. GATHERING OF NATIONS ~ Native Cultural, Spiritual, Arts, Music, Dance, Festival & Conference

Oct 7th – Oct 9th

  • HoursFriday: 1:30 - 9 p.m.; Saturday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Sunday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

This year, the event will be held in the beautiful Verde Valley at Jackpot Ranch (until recently, known as "Medicine Man Ranch") on sacred ancestral Yavapai-Apache land, next to the combined Yavapai-Apache Nation Reservation. "WOPILA" is a Lakota word meaning to give great thanks, to have a deep, real appreciation, gratitude, and gratefulness for all we are given, and especially for all of those people who mean so much to us within our immediate community of family and closest friends.

The overarching theme for this year's festival and conference is matched by the incredible list of speakers, artists, singers, dancers, flutists, drummers, and cultural and spiritual teachers:

  • Tribal Chiefs of many Nations
  • Sundance & Yuwipi (Medicine Man) Chiefs, speakers and storytellers
  • Fine artists (painters, potters, doll/Katchina carvers, shield makers, silversmiths and other craftspeople)
  • Musicians (singers, flutists, dancers, drummers)

Attendees, bring your handheld drums to participate in various drumming sessions/ceremonies.

Just some of the 15-plus Native presenters for this event include:

  • Henry Red Cloud (Oglala Lakota Sioux, 5th Generation Chief, founder and executive director of Red Cloud Renewable)
  • James White Wakute' Wakiyaniipiciye / "Moves Like Thunder" (Dakota, 5th Generation Sundance & Yuwipi Chief, Medicine Man)
  • Robert Soto (Lipan Apache, acting Chairman, Bird, Feather, Gourd & Eagle Dancer, flutist, religious leader)
  • Garrett Duncan (Dine'/Navajo Cosmic Star Ambassador)
  • Ruben M. Saufkie Sr. (Hopi, spiritual and ancestral wisdom teacher, Katsina carver, silversmith)
  • Itasha Tashina (White Mountain Apache/Arcturian, educator, Sundancer and Sacred Pipe Holder)
  • Gordon Lewis "Brightstar" (Yavapai-Apache, fine artist, singer, drummer and cultural teacher)
  • and, the famous Apache Nation "Ga'an Mountain Spirit Crown Dancers" known across Indian Pow Wow Country for their elaborate, intricate and mesmerizing sacred spirit dances.

This year's exciting and unique event, when you include all the various Apache Tribes, will involve Native People from 15-plus Nations. Photos and biographies of all the people contributing to the year's amazing event can be found on the website.

For the first time ever, we will have two (2) complete, separate, raffle events: three different creations/artwork provided by internationally famous Yavapai-Apache artist Gordon Lewis and a number of art creations provided by the burgeoning, young artists of the Yavapai-Apache Art Guild where the proceeds will go directly to them to support the further creation of their uniquely valuable cultural artwork.

We will also have a great variety of local food truck vendors providing healthy, organic, vegetarian and vegan food choices as well as local, Native food vendors.
