28th Annual Southwest Wings Spring Fling

Spring is closer than you think. Soon it will be time for the 2018 Spring Fling, bringing people from all over the globe to see the birds and other wildlife which makee southeast Arizona so special.

Organised by Southwest Wings, Sierra Vista's very own birding and nature festival, the Spring Fling will be held from May 2-5, 2018 and offers a variety of field trips into the wildest places of southeast Arizona.

Led by expert local guides, the field trips consist of small groups and are mostly day trips which start early, and many of them are out of the van and birding by 6:30 am. Overnight trips include the Chiricahua Mountains and the Santa Cruz Valley and there are even nocturnal owling outings. All trips start from the Cochise College Library, Colombo Avenue, Sierra Vista.

Registration for the Spring Fling opens from January 1 and is only available online via the Southwest Wings website at www.swwings.org

"Southwest Wings Spring Fling offers the best birding in the whole of Arizona," said organizer Gordon Lewis. "It is the closest event to the best birds that southeast Arizona has to offer. From the exotic Elegant Trogon to the enigmatic Montezuma Quail there is plenty for everyone.

"May is the beginning of the nesting season for many of our local specialties which makes them easy to find and see. Hopped up on hormones, they are looking their best and in full song. The hummingbirds are humming, the warblers are warbling and the flycatchers are feeding.

"Whether you want to see Red-faced and Rufous-capped Warblers or the many iconic hummingbirds, there are plentiful opportunities on the many exciting trips. As well as birds there will be reptiles, butterflies and dragonflies, many of them special to southeast Arizona.

"Trips soon get filled up, so make sure to book early while the full range is still available.”
