"A Mountain" Challenge Entices Valley Residents to Rediscover Tempe
Apr 23-May 31
A little ingenuity is all it takes to get back out and enjoy all that Tempe has to offer this spring, and that’s exactly what Valley residents will find with the “A Mountain” Challenge, a two-month competition that kicks off on Thursday, April 1, 2021.
Presented by the Downtown Tempe Authority and Zebra E-Bikes, the fun, healthy and safe event showcases “A Mountain” in Tempe (also known as Hayden Butte) as a convenient and accessible hiking destination, while giving participants the chance to support the Tempe downtown community and compete for prizes.
“After a year of COVID-related cancellations and restrictions, there’s loads of energy and excitement waiting to be rediscovered in Tempe,” said Kate Borders, Executive Director with Downtown Tempe Authority. “The ‘A Mountain’ Challenge gives people a great reason to take advantage of some of Arizona’s best outdoor amenities during patio season and support our downtown merchants on their path to recovery.”
The challenge allows participants to enjoy the great outdoors while tackling hikes on their own schedule, solo or with a partner, within a two-month time period, from April 1 to May 31. Registration is open through May 15; the $20 entry fee includes a challenge t-shirt and access to an online tracking portal.
Participants will log their hikes via the portal and earn milestone prizes from local merchants based on the number of times they climb “A Mountain.” Entrants who complete the hike at least 40 times – roughly the distance of hiking Mt. Everest – will be eligible to win the grand prize, a new Zebra Z1 e-bike. Additional entries for the grand prize will be awarded to anyone who tags @DowntownTempe in their social posts and uses #AMtnChallenge2021. A grand prize presentation event is planned for Saturday, June 5, 2021.
During the milestone and grand prize distribution events (April 17, May 8, May 20 and June 5), challenge participants will have the chance to explore another option for rediscovering the best of Tempe by test-riding Zebra e-bikes. The bikes, which travel with a maximum speed of 20 mph, offer a convenient and environmentally friendly way to travel with minimal fuel expense. They are classified as a class 2 electric bicycle, meaning they can be used on bicycle and multi-use paths and parked in areas where bicycles are allowed, which makes it easier than ever to visit favorite Tempe downtown destinations.
“Over the past year, health has taken center stage, but it’s no secret that the environment plays a critical role in our overall health,” said Michael Brown, Zebra Co-Founder and Director of Marketing. “Zebra e-bikes make clean and efficient transportation more accessible, so as people emerge from the financial and physical constraints of the last year they can fall in love with their favorite cities, including Tempe, all over again.”
