Glendale, a booming city just northwest of Phoenix, knows how to honor the past while loving today’s thrills.

Right Now

Browse bungalows and historic buildings that now house antiques shops in Historic Downtown Glendale and the Catlin Court Historic District. The collection is so great, the city refers to itself as “Arizona’s Antiques Capital” – and Sunset magazine and USA Today agree. Both districts have multiple properties in the National Register of Historic Places, some dating back to Glendale’s early days in the late 1800s.

For an even more immersive trip back in time, tour the Manistee Ranch, one of the Phoenix area’s last working cattle ranches. The gardens, Victorian home, and barn are historic sites to be seen.

Flash forward to today, when Glendale has become a destination for sports and entertainment. See the National Football League’s Arizona Cardinals play at University of Phoenix Stadium, which also hosted Super Bowls XLII and XLIX, multiple college football bowl games, and the College Football National Championship game. Across the street, the Arizona Coyotes – the state’s National Hockey League team – take to the ice at Gila River Arena, which is also where big-name acts like Taylor Swift and Madonna perform.

Where to feed all those hungry spectators and history buffs? Westgate Entertainment District, which includes multiple restaurants in varying styles, is just outside Gila River Arena’s doors.

If you’re not one for touchdowns or flashbacks (or even if you are), come for the city’s events, including the Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival, Glendale Chocolate Festival, and Glendale Glitters, which sets Downtown Glendale aglow with hundreds of thousands of holiday lights.
