History & Nature
Dead Horse is also adjacent to the Verde River Greenway State Natural Area, which conserves land in its natural state. If you’re eager to experience Arizona’s nature in its purest form, this is the place to be. A unique ecosystem and riparian zone offer plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. And you’ll want to make more than one trip, too – life along the river changes with the seasons so there’s always something new to experience. Keep an eye out for raptors, neotropical migrants, songbirds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.
Things To Do
At an elevation of 3,300 feet, the park enjoys mild temperatures, perfect for camping, mountain biking in the Coconino National Forest, hiking along the picturesque Verde River, canoeing, picnicking, fishing, or wading in the refreshingly cool water.
The nearby river and lagoons make this a great place for beginning or seasoned anglers. The water is stocked with Rainbow Trout throughout the winter, and Channel Catfish are stocked in the warmer months, so cast a line whenever you’re here.

A day trip might be too short, so make sure to reserve one of the eight one-room log camping cabins. Or, camp out on one of the many campgrounds.
