CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH FACILITY? DETAILED VERSION OF A MINI-EARTH? EDUCATIONAL CENTER DEDICATED TO DISCOVERY OF THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES? BIOSPHERE 2 IS ALL OF THIS AND MUCH MORE.
Located in Southern Arizona at the base of the picturesque Santa Catalina Mountains and surrounded by natural desert preserve, Biosphere 2 has been a hub of research, outreach, and education since its first mission in 1991. These missions, during which scientists were sealed inside the Biosphere to conduct research for extended periods of time, put Biosphere 2 on the map for innovative scientific research, and that tradition continues today.
The University of Arizona assumed management of Biosphere 2 in June 2007. Gifts, grants, and awards ensure that top-notch research will continue far into the future.
One of the most unique aspects of Biosphere 2 is its outreach to the public. If you’ve ever wanted to get a glimpse into the future of our planet, this is the place to be! From field ecology courses to field trips and summer science academies, this gem places Southern Arizona on the map for real-time biological research.
Biosphere 2 is located about an hour outside Tucson, which makes it the perfect mini day trip. With Tucson’s many lodging options, you’ll be sure to find a place to stay that suits your needs.
