Cochise Stronghold Canyon Nature Retreat
The Cochise Stronghold Canyon Nature Retreat is unique - even in Arizona. Accommodations include a full guest ranch/suite and authentic Native American Tipi. The straw-bale constructed guesthouse and site is a model of ecological living featuring passive solar design, solar heated water, rainwater collection, erosion control berms, permaculture, nataive species vegetation/landscaping and worm composting. It is located off the beath path at 5,000 feet elevation in the Dragoon Mountains.
The proprietor are Nancy and John Yates, conscientious stewards of the land and champions of authentic geotourism in the region. Nancy is from Canada with a background in nutrition, psychology and environmental administration. John is a native Arizonan with a PhD in physiology and author of therapeutic massage curriculum. To them and their many visitors, the Stronghold" is sacred ground and the Canyon Nature Retreat provides a space for others to partake of the powerful offerings of the canyon and its ecology, wildlife, history and culture. The Yates are hospitable hosts and local guides, providing a plethora of information and facilitating connections for their guests with a number of local resources - from locally owned shops, produce farms and nearby attractions to resident meditation, massage and reiki practitioners. Breakfasts include unique recipes using native plants and homegrown herbs and produce.
Guests can access a number of field guides and natural history books on-site. The retreat offers abundant habitat for numerous bird species including the Lucifer hummingbird and others, northern cardinals, green towhee, Mexican blue jays, sparrows, warblers and five species of woodpeckers. Resident deer and javelina welcome guests while fox, ringtail cats, badgers and jackrabbits visit frequently. An occasional ocelot or bobcat sighting is a thrill. Nearby attractions include Butterfield Station, Dragoon Srpings, Fort Bowie and Apache Pass, several ghost towns, Kartchner Caverns State Park and the Amerind Foundation.
The Cochise Stronghold Canyon Nature Retreat won the 2005 Arizona Governor's Technnmology in Tourism Award for its website promoting the region and linking visitors to other locally-owned businesses/attractions throughout the area. Speaking from first-hand experience, visiting the Cochise Stronghold Canyon Nature Retreat is one of the most authentic and rejuvenating sustainable tourism and geotourism experiences in Arizona."
