Arizona Chosen as Best Domestic Tourism Destination!
December 03, 2009
PHOENIX (December 3, 2009) – Arizona has been voted by readers of Global Traveler magazine as the Best Domestic Tourism Destination!
Global Traveler's annual GT Tested Awards program surveyed more than 25,000 business and leisure travelers to determine the best in business and luxury travel for 2009. The results of the sixth annual awards selections have been published in the magazine’s December issue. The Arizona Office of Tourism will receive the award at Global Traveler’s awards dinner in New York on January 21, 2010.
“This is a tremendous honor and a wonderful reflection of how the Arizona tourism industry has worked together to bring awareness of Arizona as a great leisure destination,” said Sherry Henry, director of the Arizona Office of Tourism. “It’s wonderful to know this distinction was determined by travelers who recognize what an amazing destination Arizona is.”
In 2008, more than 37 million domestic and international overnight visitors experienced Arizona as a travel destination, spending more than $18 billion throughout the state. The tourism industry is a key economic driver for Arizona’s economy. Last year, tourism spending generated 166,900 travel industry jobs and $2.6 billion in local, state and federal tax revenues.
Following Arizona in the category of Best Domestic Tourism Destination was New Mexico, Hawaii, Florida and Colorado rounding out the top five. In addition to Arizona’s distinction, the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa was selected as one of the top ten Best Hotels in the Western United States category and The Boulders Resort was selected as one of the top ten Best Domestic Golf Resorts.
The reader survey was conducted from January 1, 2009, to August 31, 2009. Open-ended questionnaires were available in subscriber copies of the magazine, online and through direct mail and e-mail. Only questionnaires with more than 50 percent of the questions answered were considered. Employees of the magazine and members of the travel industry were barred from participation.
