Joanna Proffitt

A legal secretary during the week, Joanna Proffitt is inspired by the vast array of sights and never-ending subject matter found in Arizona. Born in Chicago but raised among the saguaros in the “Valley of the Sun”, she currently lives in Surprise, Arizona. Never one to sit still long, she can often be found taking a road trip—or at least planning one—to visit a unique or interesting place around the state. With her iPhone in hand, she tends to take photographs with that just as often as with her fancy Cannon DSLR. Her work has been included in numerous juried group exhibitions throughout the Phoenix area including shows through Herberger Theater Art Gallery, {9} The Gallery, West Valley Arts Council and West Valley Art Museum. You can get information about upcoming shows and view more of her work on Facebook at: Joanna Proffitt Photography or on Instagram at: joannaproffittphotography.

As an (almost) life-long resident  of Arizona, I can personally attest  to the large variety of activities  and events that one has to  choose from in this state. From  exploring the depths of the Grand  Canyon, to reaching new heights  in a hot air balloon, the sky is  literally the limit! Watching  balloons take flight is magical. From the sounds of the burners igniting flames to carry the balloons up and away, to the seemingly endless color combinations, people are often amazed and delighted at the sight. This chilly winter morning was no different as balloon after balloon floated higher and higher while getting smaller and smaller as they went. I captured this image as one balloon was being inflated for take-off while another had already soared away in the distance. I love the color and patterns against the perfectly clear blue desert sky. Watching dozens of balloons take to the sky this particular morning certainly created an unforgettable sight that I will always remember. If you haven’t attended a local balloon festival yet, you are in luck. The Arizona Balloon Classic lands in the Valley January 20th through 22nd, 2017.
