Four-Day Event Celebrates Creativity in the Southwest
The 2nd Annual Scottsdale Fall for the Arts will take place in downtown Scottsdale Nov. 7-10, 2013. Building on last year’s event, Scottsdale Fall for the Arts features eight individual events (up from five events in 2012) and spotlights the city’s vibrant cultural scene, which is brimming with an estimated 100 art galleries, world-class museums and performance spaces, and an award-winning public art program.
The following is this year’s creative lineup for Scottsdale Fall for the Arts:
• Fall for the Arts ArtWalk
Date: Nov. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Location: Downtown Scottsdale Arts District
Information: Hosted by the Scottsdale Gallery Association, Fall for the Arts ArtWalk features original art in 50 galleries plus artists’ receptions and exhibition openings. Admission is free, and complimentary valet parking is offered on Main Street, just west of Marshall Way.
• West Select Sale
Date: Nov. 7 & 8
Location: Phoenix Art Museum
Information: A $125 ticket gets you access to a series of events, including a kick-off reception Thursday evening, a sale preview on Friday, an artist presentation, and the sale where you can bid on more than 110 works of art including paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs by leading artists. The awards lunch is held on Friday afternoon and an additional $35 per person.
• Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts presents Diavolo Dance Theater
Date: Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 8 at 8 p.m.
Location: Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts
Information: Led by founder Jacques Heim, Los Angeles-based Diavolo Dance Theater is an internationally renowned modern acrobatic dance company that takes movement, athletics and daring acts to the extreme. The troupe’s gravity-defying performances explore the human experience using oversized, surrealistic sets and everyday structures. Tickets start at $29.
• Scottsdale Public Art and SRP present Canal Convergence
Date: Nov. 7-10
Location: Scottsdale Waterfront in Downtown Scottsdale
Information: Canal Convergence brings together performance art, temporary installations and interactive pieces in a new community tradition that illustrates the important role of water and community in Scottsdale and the Sonoran Desert. Artisan Markets set up on Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon showcase local artists’ works.
• Paint Out Quick Draw Auction, hosted by Main Street Galleries
Date: Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location: Downtown Scottsdale Arts District – Main Street and Marshall Way
Information: Watch local, regional and national artists paint and sculpt live during this free event in downtown Scottsdale, then bid on the one-of-a-kind artwork in the two-hour “Quick Draw” auction. Live music and special exhibition art shows at nearby galleries to occur simultaneously.
• Beaux Arts Fundraiser
Date: Saturday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.
Location: Scottsdale Artists School
Information: Enjoy a fabulous and festive evening featuring a silent auction, live music, artist demonstrations, and libations and light fare for $125. All proceeds benefit the Scottsdale Artists School.
• Conversations with Artists, hosted by Gallery Row
Date: Nov. 9, afternoon
Location: Downtown Scottsdale Arts District – Main Street, west of Marshall Way
Information: Mix and mingle with artists on Gallery Row and ask them questions about their work while browsing through various art galleries. Free valet parking.
• Street Chalk Event, hosted by We Are Marshall
Date: Nov. 9, afternoon
Location: Downtown Scottsdale Arts District – Marshall Way, north of Indian School Road
Information: Marshall Way, north of Indian School Road, will be turned into a canvas Saturday afternoon with artists creating masterpieces right on the street.
• Ongoing Exhibitions
Location: Downtown Scottsdale
Information: The Scottsdale Arts District is home to a wide selection of world-class art galleries, many of which are opening new exhibits during Scottsdale Fall for the Arts. Browse collections ranging from western and Native American to modern and contemporary. Check out the ongoing exhibits at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art for additional creative fodder. On display this fall is Narrower to the Interior: Contemporary Japanese Artists (through Jan. 12, 2014); Julianne Swartz: How Deep is Your (through Jan. 26, 2014); and Inspire (through Jan. 5, 2014). And located just minutes from downtown Scottsdale, Desert Botanical Garden will once again play host to a Dale Chihuly Exhibit Nov. 10, 2013 through May 18, 2014. Chihuly is credited with revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and elevating the perception of the glass medium.
